Forfitying question(s)

I got a small question, hope you guys could help me with it.
I've bought 4 rhombus +33 damage and a level 48 bagi warrior weapon(Trying to think ahead ), went to the alchemist, payed 40k dil and created 1 socket. I was kind of surprised to see that it created only 1 socket, but I still inserted 1 gem into it. Here are a few questions I got about that subject, since I'm not really sure what I'm doing .
1. Do I need to go to the alchemist and create a socket each and every time till I get 4 sockets? If I do, what's the chances I'll get 4 sockets?
2. If I try to create a new socket and it fails, will it delete the other sockets? If it will, will it delete the gems in it?(Since I already inserted 1 gem into my weapon)
3. Is it 100% safe to insert a gem into a socket?
