These are my personal experiences with this situation, I am by no means an authority in this subject, thus, I would like people to comment and correct.
After playing so many GvG matches with the Revenants, we have had many occasions in which we blocked the flag stand. I am talking about blocking the flag by standing in a straight line many feet away from the stand (by character feet of course), or even clustering around the flag stand as close as one foot away from it.
Here are some facts and issues that one needs to be aware of when these maneuvers are being made. Please add more at will.
When a leader calls a block it is because the team needs to secure a morale boost and the team is at more than 2 seconds away, and hopefully less than 30 seconds away from getting one.
Use arrow keys and mouse for movement, I personally found that moving backwards and forwards using my mouse (I use a trackball) to direct, and using my strafe left and right to position myself is more reliable than using the mouse to simply click a spot in the environment and wait for the “pathing” to do its job. It would also mean that by the time your character arrives at that spot, maybe another player has decided it was the right spot for his character as well. The flexibility of moving using backward/strafe left/forward/strafe right would allow you to dynamically move the character to a desired position, and in line with other people’s characters.
One has to know by now, that shoulder to shoulder positioning is not necessary, in fact, one can cover many feet of “blockade” by simply imagining that if one’s character were to extend its arms horizontally to the side, it should be sufficient for it to be able to touch one’s comrade’s shoulder, and you have a block. If you are in doubt of what effectively works as a block, try it in a scrimmage with your teammates, and try it on several maps (we have a choice of maps in our alliance, I am sure any member of AB would accommodate).
When blocking, face the enemy at the flag stand. Attack while blocking, unless your character is a melee character (which would mean it would have to move to reach its target). Make sure that when attacking, you do not move from your position, so keep an eye on your aggro bubble and be aware of your casting and attacking range. Also, as you face your enemy you are not allowing the enemy to hit you in the back and land more critical hits.
If you are suffering from very high DP, then please inform your battle leader… briefly and concisely. No matter what, you have to obey your battle leader. So even if after informing him/her of your high DP, and he wants you to still participate in the block, DO IT. It may be a trade off to the battle leader, to secure the boost in order for the entire team to benefit from it.
If you are carrying a flag, inform your leader. It would be foolish to lose the boost, and also on top of it lose our team flag because you got clobbered since you were in the front line. Again, communicate. Usually, the flagger would be standing behind all other characters along with the monks who are in effect healing the rest of the party. The flagger at this point (whether he/she is carrying the flag or not) should be snaring and delaying the enemy flagger. Again, this is also up to the discretion of the battle leader… so make sure to be clear on that situation before the match. There are also reasons for you to leave the flag where it spawns instead of carrying it with you. Many leaders prefer to have an extra flag either carried or stowed away (hidden) near the flagstand battle, other leaders prefer to have the flag left at the spawn point until enemy claims the flag stand. Please be clear on your battle leader's preference.
If the enemy team has AoE damage, then ranged characters that do not have snares (or the snares are re-charging) should concentrate on mitigating and/or disrupting the enemy characters that are hitting with AoE damage on your entire team. So if there are casters trying to cast meteor shower, then interrupt them. And if you are a heal party/extinguish spammer, go on and use it over and over again, although you have to watch out for situations where what your character does would land it face down on the ground. Things like scourge healing can deal lots of damage to your spamming heal party character, and oh by the way, ether prodigy can kill you. I am sure that DP sacrificing necros can get themselves killed as well if they are not careful.
If the battle leader is instructing you to attack the flagger, then do so if you are a ranged character. Watch out for the situation where enemy flagger could possibly:
Be killed by your team’s offence, and the flag could be picked up by other enemy player
Switch off the flag to another enemy player.
Keep your eye not only on the enemy flagger, but on the enemy flag itself
When the block is established, the enemy flagger will not give up trying to get to the flag stand. So you have to be flexible enough to move around as the enemy flagger moves. This also entails watching the movements of the enemy flagger (as mentioned above). Move as your enemy moves. If you are very close to the flag stand (a few feet) it would require your character to re-position itself many times. Watch your teammate’s position in the environment to make sure that every possible hole is blocked. If you are many feet away from the stand, movement would be more like the team moving in one fell swoop to establish a “line” block. This maneuver (the “line” block) should be directed and established by your battle leader.
Other effective blocks are spirits, but, spirits could be taken down easily, and they take time to be summoned.
Above all don’t panic, you should have your towel handy at all times.
In any of the cases, and no matter what happens, follow your leader’s direction. It really all boils down to how disciplined the entire team is, to effectively body block the flag stand. There were times when my character was out of position, and my battle leader had to sternly direct me to get off my butt and block the flag stand (I was being knocked down by enemies). http://www.theamazonbasin.com/gw/forums/index.php?showtopic=7091
