Two useful shortcuts about the drops are (by default) the G and the Z:
With G you pick up the nearest drop (Keep in mind that you will have to press it more times if the drops are more than one).
With Z you can see the names of all the near drops.
For a small period of time, the drops can only be picked up by the player that did the most damage to the monster that dropped them. If the player doesn't pick them up, then they become available for anyone.

The only drops that can't be picked up by anyone are the drops that have a player's name next to their names. These could be either quest items or special goods (drops of a killed convoy animal). Quest items can be picked up only by the player who they belong to. Special goods can be picked up either by the player who they belong to or by a thief (both player and thief must have summoned a convoy animal in order to be able to pick them up).
