Overview

Silkroad is based on the history of trading in China along the Silk Road, a historical network of trade routes in Asia. The game attempts to reproduce the Silk Road in a much smaller scale, looking realistic and at the same time incorporating fantasy elements such as the use of special magical skills and abilities. One of the game's most noted features is allowing players to choose three different job roles after their character achieves level 20. The game currently has a level cap of 80.
The Korea and international version of Silkroad Online have released both the Chinese and European races, classes, and a large map that includes both Asian and central European locations, such as Constantinople. Different races also have access to different character abilities. On July 24, 2007, Joymax has released an expansion of the game entitled "Silkroad Online Legends I, Europe." The expanded game includes European architecture, characters, clothing, and whole new abilities for European players to use.[1]
Gameplay
After registering a login name and password on the game Web site, the player logs in to the game through the client, then creates a new character. To set up the new character, the player creates a name for their character, a "figure," or a character with a small backstory, and their character's height and volume, which will not be relevant to gameplay and will alter only their character's appearance. Then, two other fields are chosen (which do alter gameplay): the starting clothing type and starting weapon. Although both aspects can be changed during gameplay, the European race determines what equipment you can use by the skill trees (or masteries) you level. A character with a lv80 mastery in cleric and no mastery in rogue cannot use Heavy Armor that only the warrior mastery allows only warriors to use. This does not apply to weapons or accessories (rings, necklaces or earrings). This does not apply to the Chinese character race, as they can change and use whichever weapon and armor type they wish.
Servers
Joymax has periodically released new servers to contain the growth of new players. Characters cannot be transferred between servers. Due to the popularity of the game, it is sometimes hard to log into the game during peak hours. Recently Joymax has introduced a Premium Gold Ticket in an attempt to solve this problem. With a price of $US20 it enables players to login no matter what the server traffic.
Locations
There are currently five cities in the International version of Silkroad Online: Jangan, Donwhang, Hotan, Samarkand, and Constantinople. They are separated by seven sections: China, Western China, Oasis Kingdom, Taklamakan, Central Asia, Asia Minor, and Europe. Each different section has a different level ranges of monsters. Joymax plans to add more areas in the future, such as West Asia..
Region Race Levels
China Chinese 1-20
Western China Chinese 21-30
Oasis Kingdom Both 31-60
Taklamakan Both 61-80
Central Asia European 31-40
Asia Minor European 21-30
Europe European 1-20
(Note: Although one region may be Chinese or European, players of the opposite race are still able to access that area.)
Cities
There are 5 cities in the International version of Silkroad Online (from east to west): Jangan, Donwhang, Hotan, Samarkand, and Constantinople. Each of the cities has NPCs. The NPCs usually sell items, repair items, and give you quests. In every city, there is a Defense Trader which sells and repair Protectors; a Blacksmith that can repair and sell weapons; a Potion Store that sells herbs, potions, and pills; a Grocery Trader (called an Inn in Smarkland and Constaintinople) that sells alchemy items, accessories, Moving Speed Scrolls, and capes; a Hunter Union where you can buy a Hunter Identity card; a Trader Association where you can buy a Trader Flag; a Specialties Shop which allows you to sell and buy trader goods; and a Stable where you can purchase horses (fast means of transport, also act as a shield from damage), pets, transport (differ from horses in the way that they carry a merchant's goods) and various other items for Stable-related purchases.
Cities are safe from monsters, which dwell outside the walls, and job conflicts (traders or hunters fighting thieves).
In addition, it has been impossible to set up a stall as part of the stall network outside a city since the addition of Asia Minor.

Jangan (Chang'an) China

Unique monsters
In the game Silkroad, there are a number of unique monsters that are very powerful and similar to "bosses" in other computer games. They spawn in designated areas every couple of hours. When they do spawn there is a serverwide message indicated that the unique has spawned. When fighting a unique, they will spawn their own monsters (champions, giants, and elites) when the unique's health hit a certain point. When killed, the unique monster will drop a good number of items and gold, depending on the level of the player who killed it.
Currently in the international version, the unique monsters consist of Tiger Girl (level 20), Cerberus (level 24), Ivy (level 30), Uruchi (level 40), Isyutaru (level 60), and Lord Yarkan (level 80). Future uniques are planned to be added to the international version, such as Saytan (level 90). Other possible additions may be Roc (level 100) - A unique from an event in another version of SRO (tSRO). Also, with the addition of the ch'in tomb uniques (7 in all, roughly) there will be much more coming with the level cap 100.
Gaining experience
A Silkroad Online character posing.
Similar to most MMORPGs, characters increase their skills and levels by gaining experience points through combat and quests. In combat, the amount of points gained is determined by the difficulty of monster killed. For points gained through quests, the amount of points is proportional to its difficulty. Characters also gain "Job experience points" by successfully completing objectives for a profession, such as a merchant completing a trade run, a hunter killing a thief, thief killing a hunter, or a hunter completing a trade with a merchant.
Points are divided into four types; Experience Points (XP), Skill Points (SP), Job Experience points, and Stat points. Experience points are used to increase the character's level, Skill Points are used to raise masteries and skills, and Job Experience points allows the character to level up their Job level, which in future updates will provide bonuses. In addition, the higher the job level, the more damage will be dealt to both player and non-player character (NPC) enemies of the profession (such as hunter attacking a trader).
After leveling up their regular character level, the character receives five Stat points, of which one is automatically applied to Strength and one is applied to Intelligence. The other three points are added at the discretion of the player, and can be distributed between Strength and Intelligence. Strength increases hit points and physical attack, while Intelligence increases mana points and magical attack.
Berserker
Sometimes referred to as "berzerk" or "zerk," berserker mode is a special mode of enhanced running speed and attack power. While in Berserker mode, a character changes in appearance to a glowing red color. In addition to the four main points (XP, SP, Job Experience, and Stat) gained by killing monsters, a character can also obtain berserker points. However, these points accumulate at a much slower pace, as one does not receive them for each kill. Once a character gains five berserker points (as indicated by the pink dots in the upper left corner, around the character's picture), the character has the choice of enabling berserker when they choose. This mode lasts for around one minute, until the berserker points run out. Berserker mode is useful for killing a large or difficult monster faster, killing larger amounts of monsters in a shorter amount of time, killing another player faster, or simply to escape or travel someplace else at a faster speed.
