So What's wrong with being a noob?
So What's wrong with being a noob?
I read a post today from someone who I will call "Mr A" on these forums. It was short and consisted of a few words to the effect that everyone who is a member of this community is a dumb noob and couldnt run an instance if their life depended on it, finishing with a "bye forever you noobs".
The thread was closed shortly after which is probably a wise choice, and I didnt bother to look at Mr A's previous posts to see what got him all upset, but it occured to me - and I believe a few others - that being a "noob" isnt really the derogatory term Mr A intended it to be. I guess he feels he wants to be associated with hard core elite players and I have to confess that I find these types of player offensive, ignorant and a blight on any on line gaming community.
For me I guess I will always be a "noob". There are things in this game that I will probably never know or understand, and thats okay by me. I enjoy it fine as I am.
Heres a bad example:
I was running through Goldshire the other night and as I went past the town I saw the general message come up that "[insert name] has been defeated in a duel by [insert name]". I then saw the loser of the fight ask to join the winners guild and then the winner of the duel post "youre a noob", and I thought to myself how utterly demeaning this is. Sorry, but as I see it the winner proved himself a complete t****r with those 3 words.
Heres a good example:
I managed to get a portal to Shakattack City* a week ago with my level 56 hunter. Wow what a cool place but it felt like walking into an Armani shop wearing shorts and a t shirt. Anyway I found the market and upgraded my skills. Clicking on anythign I could like a kid in a sweet shop, I found this troll selling unusual pendants (yeah I know you all know where this is going - like I said, Im a noob). I was stunned that some of these were available and laughed at the soap on a rope and whispered to my friend about some of the others. One in particular was a 10g pendant giving the ability to "leap short distances" which my friend asked me to buy for him. trusting it wasnt BOP I did so and made my way to the Exodar to meet him.
so we spent the next half an hour jumping from wall to wall, box to box, etc seeing if there was any difference in our abilities, then suggesting maybe it only works in certain areas of situations.
Eventually my mate decided to look it up on a forum and came back to tell me it was all a Blizz-Con and many people were up in arms about it. Naturally I was gutted that I had basically led my mate to waste 10g and apologised profusely, but after a few minutes we were both laughing our heads off about it (at least I was and I hope he was lol). Fortunately for him he was recently minted with a few good sales in the AH so could afford the loss.
Now thats a good example of being a noob. Doing something completely dumb, that many people obviously know about already, and still being able to laugh about it and continue on as if nothing had happened.
I would rather play with this kind of noob or that duel loser any day of the week than some oik like the duel winner or Mr A.
(*I call it Shakattack City because of my age and the fact it annoys some people when I change the names in game - and I can spell it easier) http://www.worldofwar.net/forums/blogs/viewblog.php?userid=284801&entry=504
