Can you pick up just one item..., from a stack of similar items?

I searched around but couldn't find if this had been answered before. Is it possible to just take one item off a big stack in your inventory? For example, let's say I want to craft some armor that needs 6 tanned hide squares. Can I go to the Xunlai chest and just get 6, or do I have to pick up the whole stack of 250, go to the crafter, and then return depost the remaining 244?
