Beating the Doppelganger, Basic Tips and Skills to Bring
I didn't see a post on this topic and just wanted to jot this quick, because it is helpful...
The doppelganger is a lovely foe who can be as strong or weak as you want it to be. Also, he has some AI problems, which can easily be exploited.
The doppelganger carries a bow and an axe; he starts out with the bow and later switches to axe if you enter melee range. He has all the skills you have, but at high level attributes (12 in every attribute to be precise). It is often wise to bring empty skill slots, to narrow the doppelgangers choices.
General tips to defeat the doppelganger:
When attacking at range, you will get a damage bonus if you are on higher ground.
When attacking at range, you can strafe the doppelganger`s arrows. Strafing can be done by holding the right mouse key and tapping left and right very fast, or by tapping Q and E.
You can prepare before the battle by casting maintained or timed enchantments before the battle (ie, before you stand on the third rock). Time goes on while watching the cinematic, so you might want to skip that part to keep your enchantments active.
Those with a medium or high level pet will have about half a minute while pet is under attack.
I will list all the main damage skills with their profession, even though skills from the secondary profession may be equally important. Be sure to check both your own profession and your secondary profession for good tactics and skills.
Elementalist
-Out-damaging the Doppelganger: prepare with some enchantments before battle, and immediately run in with skills like Inferno, Flame Burst and Phoenix. Arcane Echo on Phoenix is a very effective combination.
-Out-exhausting the Doppelganger: bring Gale and Flame Burst. Have him knock you down until his energy is gone, and then run in and kill him.
-Bring but do not use Iron Mist, and simply bring no skills that actually do lighting damage.
-Bring Rust and Healing Signet for six seconds of lower armor - enough time to cast Frozen Burst and a couple of ice spears.
Mesmer
-Bring but do not use Ether Lord, and keep Mind Wrack on the Doppelganger.
-Bring Empathy, and strafe his attacks. This can be made easier with blinding skills such as the Elementalist`s Blinding Flash, or with evading/blocking stances such as Distortion and Dodge (ranger). The damage can be increased with a skills such as the Necromancer`s Spiteful Spirit and Price of Faillure or the Warrior`s Frenzy(the double damage is significantly better than flurry). Do not attack him and have him attack you, and he`ll be dead in no-time.
-Bring enchantments or hexes you are not going to use, and Shatter them with Shatter Enchantment, Shatter Hex and Hex Breaker. Mantra of Recovery or the Ranger`s Serpent`s Quickness will help with this too.
Monk
-Bring four maintained enchantments, and thus leave him energyless. Life Attunement, Blessed Aura, Holy Veil, Strength of Honor and Divine Boon are all good choices. Especially Life Attunement, which will decrease his damage output. Bring some smiting and a self heal to finish him off.
-Bring Scourge Healing and Heal Area, and some spammable Smiting Prayers. He will start healing himself with Heal Area, and if you stand near him he will heal you too - which will do damage to him because of Scourge Healing.
-Bring Healing Breeze as a self heal - the doppelganger uses Healing Breeze only to counter degeneration.
-Use Protective Spirit on a Pet, with Call of Protection to back that up. You can easily Wand the Doppelganger to death.
(One more thing I wanted to add for Monk Primaries that I have found very helpful:
Eqip Divine Boon and use it as a self heal - your doppelganger might use it and loose an energy regen...but every time you use it again you also get a heal from it...so its a heal for you and not for him. )
Necromancer
-Bring a lot of sacrifice skills(Especially the Order spells are great) and Awaken the blood. If you are a N/Mo, bring Scourge Sacrifice as well.
-Bring lots of useless enchantments and Desecrate Enchantments.
-Bring Spiteful Spirit and strafe his attacks - see the Mesmer(empathy) tactic above.
-Have him inflict conditions upon himself with Chillblains and Signet of Agony. Bring Virulence for over 10 degeneration worth of conditions.
Ranger
-Bring a skillbar full of spirits and shoot him while he is casting the spirits. Feel free to switch one spirit out for a bow attack.
-Bring Evasion skills, throw Dirt and traps. He will chase you to throw dirt at you, and you will lead him through all the traps you set out for him.
-Be a Beastmaster. The Doppelganger doesn`t have a pet, and will fight your pet before he fights you.
Warrior
-Bash him.
-Bash him while he is using Frenzy, and you are not.
-Bash him with adrenaline based and energy based skills with For Great Justice up, for maximum damage, while he is using Frenzy.
-Bring high cost adreneline skills, and have him bring "Lose all Adrenaline" skills.
-Warriors can just kill him in a couple of seconds.
