On the weekend I had my first serious test. Up until then when we went out I curved my veganism a bit...you know, so that I would feel comfortable eating out. I'm very conscious about putting out the perception of a picky eater, and I find people get very confused when you ask them specific questions about the contents of their food. Most, if not all of the restaurants here have no vegan specific dishes. While they do cater to vegetarians, vegans need to be extra careful since a lot of these dishes are served with an exceptional amount of dairy products (cheese, butter, etc.)

But Saturday morning I became a better vegan. Jon's parents treated us to breakfast as this AMAZING restaurant known for their early morning food. Whenever we go there I have the same meal- "The Surprise". It's delicious, my mouth waters now thinking about it. It's french toast with a slice of ham, swiss cheese, dijion mustard and a fried egg, all topped off with fruit....scumptious!!! ( I particularly like to eat it smothered in maple syrup!!) It's heaven on a plate. But I was determined to stick to my vegan dreams.

I searched the menu for something fantastic that would suit my appetite. Crepes fill with chocolate, omelets, breakfast sandwiches with cheese and eggs, fruit and english creme! Everywhere I looked I saw ANIMAL!!!!!! Finally I order a small fruit cup and a dry bagel....talk about boring. I could have made something much more exciting at home. But I learned a lesson- I can truly resist temptation.

The key to enjoying being a vegan is NOT to deny yourself food. This isn't a diet, or a fast, it's simply a change in my life. To deny myself food is to punish myself! And that's the first mistake!

Anyone trying veganism out should go by this rule- you can ever WHATEVER you want. You really can. I choose not to eat meat, and I continue to choose. And the first time you choose not to eat something you use to love, you'll feel proud of you self. The first step is the hardest, but the remaining are easy.

The more days that pass, the more meat, eggs, and milk become like a distant dream. The thought of eating an egg makes me feel ill...watching someone cut up a piece of meat makes me squirm. I'm starting to get squeamish thinking about what I use to eat. I remember that big porter house encrusted with blue cheese that I loved, or that roast beef with red wine demi glaze....blah!

While at times I feel tempted, I'm happy to say that I'm a better vegan for resisting those urges.

Now, off to work!
