Ascension [spoilers]

Last night, I helped Pooka and Mage run Elona Reach; previously we had done Dunes of Despair. Pooka's character was a Paragon, and therefore Elonian, but he managed to Ascend in Tyria for the 50k XP bonus. I gather from the wiki that this is a much nicer XP reward than you can get in Chapters 2 or 3 for Ascending.

Pooka was pretty happy about the whole deal, but I'm not 100% sure why. If he had ascended in Elonia, would he still not be able to fight his doppleganger in Tyria to advance to the Dragon's Lair mission? Would he still not get the 50k XP? What am I missing about why that was a big deal? Why would people follow up with commentary about "I sense a lot of Sanctum runs coming up"? Why would I want to bring my assassin to Chapter 1 to Ascend prior to the equivalent mission in Cantha, if at all?
